Cookie Policy
This Cookie Policy details all cookies and local storage technologies used by Lucky North Star LLC (trading as Marcus Vance Network, hereinafter "MVN") on the site marcusvance.com and its subdomains. It supplements our Privacy Policy and is governed by applicable US regulations (CCPA/CPRA) as well as EU Regulation 2016/679 (GDPR) and Directive 2002/58/EC (ePrivacy Directive) for users residing in the European Union.
In accordance with applicable regulations, only strictly necessary cookies required for the service to function are placed without your prior consent. All other cookies — analytics or marketing — are only placed after collecting your explicit agreement via our consent banner.
1. What is a cookie?
A cookie is a small text file placed on your device (computer, tablet, smartphone) by a website server when you visit. It allows the site to recognize your device on a subsequent visit, remember your preferences, and enable certain features.
Cookies can be classified by their origin ("first-party" issued by MVN, or "third-party" issued by an integrated third-party service) and by their lifespan (session cookies deleted when the browser is closed, or persistent cookies retained for a specified duration).
MVN uses exclusively first-party cookies and does not place any third-party advertising cookies on your device.
2. Essential cookies — always active
These cookies are essential for the service to function. Without them, certain core features would be unavailable (authentication, security, remembering your consent preferences). These cookies do not require your consent and cannot be disabled from our banner.
| Name | Provider | Duration | Purpose |
|---|---|---|---|
| sb-access-token | Supabase | Session (browser close) | Short-lived Supabase JWT token enabling user authentication for each secure API request. |
| sb-refresh-token | Supabase | 30 days | Refresh token allowing renewal of the access token without re-entering your password. Tied to the "Stay signed in" option. |
| mvn_csrf | MVN | Session | Anti-CSRF (Cross-Site Request Forgery) token protecting all requests that modify account state. |
| mvn_lang | MVN | 12 months | Remembers the user's interface language preference so it displays correctly on the next visit. |
| mvn_cookie_consent | MVN | 12 months | Stores your cookie consent preferences (JSON: essential, analytics, marketing) so the banner is not shown on every visit. localStorage key: mvn_cookie_consent. |
3. Analytics cookies — consent required
These cookies allow us to measure traffic and analyze browsing behavior in order to improve performance and user experience. They are placed only if you have given your explicit consent via our cookie banner.
MVN uses a self-hosted analytics solution, with no behavioral data transmitted to third parties. Analytics identifiers are pseudonymized and cannot be cross-referenced with your account data.
| Name | Provider | Duration | Purpose |
|---|---|---|---|
| mvn_analytics_id | MVN (self-hosted) | 13 months | Pseudonymized visitor identifier used to distinguish separate sessions without identifying the individual. |
| mvn_session_start | MVN (self-hosted) | Session | Session start timestamp used to measure visit duration and navigation paths. |
| mvn_perf | MVN (self-hosted) | Session | Measures page load times to optimize performance, particularly for the P2P network. |
4. Marketing cookies — none at this time
Marcus Vance Network does not place any third-party advertising or marketing cookies. No Facebook pixel, Google Ads tag, TikTok Pixel, LinkedIn Insight Tag, or any other advertising network is integrated on marcusvance.com. No advertising profile is built from your browsing activity on MVN.
Should MVN ever integrate marketing tools requiring cookies in the future, this policy will be updated and your explicit consent will be requested before any cookies are placed.
5. Distributed P2P network data
The MVN P2P network uses two specific values stored in your browser's localStorage (not HTTP cookies) for the operation of the distributed node:
| localStorage key | Duration | Purpose and content |
|---|---|---|
| mvn_node_id | Permanent (until manually cleared) | Unique pseudonymous identifier for the local P2P node, randomly generated upon first activation of the P2P feature. Allows the network to identify your contribution (shared bandwidth, distributed fragments) for MVN credit calculation. This identifier is not linked to your real identity unless you are signed in. |
| mvn_p2p_consent | Permanent (until manually cleared) | Records your explicit consent to participate in the P2P network (boolean value + consent timestamp). You can revoke this consent at any time from your profile settings under "P2P Network". |
The nodeId is transmitted to MVN servers as part of credit calculation, in accordance with our Privacy Policy (Section 3 — P2P Network). Participation in the P2P network is entirely optional and can be disabled at any time.
6. Other local storage data (localStorage / IndexedDB)
In addition to cookies and P2P data, MVN uses your browser's local storage for the following features:
| Key / Type | Duration | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| mvn_preferences | Permanent | Interface preferences (theme, display density, accessibility options). |
| mvn_progress_cache | Until synced | Local cache of course progress to enable offline resume and reduce server requests. |
| mvn_audio_queue (IndexedDB) | Session | Audio queue for continuous background podcast playback. |
| mvn_p2p_queue (IndexedDB) | Active P2P session | Queue of content fragments pending redistribution on the P2P network. Cleared at the end of each contribution session. |
This data is stored locally on your device and, unless explicitly synced, is not transmitted to our servers. It can be deleted from your browser settings (under "Site data" or "Storage").
7. How to manage your cookies
Via our consent banner
On your first visit, a consent banner appears at the bottom of the page. You can: accept all cookies ("Accept all" button), decline them ("Decline" button), or customize by category ("Customize" link). Your choice is saved in localStorage under the key mvn_cookie_consent. You can update your preferences at any time via the "Manage cookies" link in the footer of every page.
